The Art of Belonging

This project is inspired by the voices and experiences of older people in Bolton. Daily, Age UK Bolton supports individuals who may be feeling lonely, low in mood, or unsure about re-engaging with the community. Many face barriers or are unable to leave their homes—but still have so much to share, and a strong desire to reconnect. Through gentle, creative activities, this project will offer uplifting ways for people to rediscover joy, build confidence, and feel part of something again.

With a befriending service that is oversubscribed, and creative groups at capacity—Age UK Bolton is experiencing high demand for meaningful creative and social opportunities. Bolton Contemporary CIC has also seen the positive impact of creative engagement on wellbeing, helping people feel more relaxed, valued, and socially connected. Participants consistently express a wish for ongoing, creative ways to come together. An example of this was in Little Lever with the AiPP Project, where classes were in demand and residents were regularly asking for more art sessions, particularly those linking with good mental health.

The Art of Belonging was shaped by real conversations between partners, potential participants and volunteers. With support from a strong volunteer model, we’re building a joyful, inclusive, and sustainable programme that helps people feel connected, uplifted, and part of their community again. This pilot will aim to reach more people, especially those who are isolated or unable to leave their home, by offering blended social and creative activities that are flexible, familiar, and person-centred.
